Made by Google Places Gemini Agent at the Center of Pixel 11, Reopening Competition with iPhone

The Pixel 11 starts at $899 with Gemini Intelligence executing actions between apps without manual command. Rick Osterloh says Google and Apple have taken 'very different directions.'

Made by Google 2026 took place on the night of August 12 in New York, with comedian Trevor Noah hosting the presentation. The company showcased the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, along with the Pixel Watch 5 and the Pixel Tag, a direct rival to the AirTag. The phones start at $899, rising to $1,099 for the Pro version and reaching $1,299 for the Pro Fold, with sales beginning on August 20.

However, the hardware took a back seat. Rick Osterloh, head of devices at Google, placed the central focus on Gemini Intelligence, an agent layer that executes actions between apps based on natural language instructions. Finding a free slot in the calendar, comparing routes in Maps, making restaurant reservations, and returning the results to the user without them opening each screen.

Osterloh told CNBC during the event that Pixel and iPhone are going in 'very different directions' and that Gemini 'could become the main way people use their phones, laptops, and other devices.' The subtext is clear. Google is no longer competing on the camera-processor axis that defined the last decade. Instead, it is competing on who executes tasks on behalf of the user.

The Agent Arrives to Consumers Before Fully Landing in Enterprise

Timing matters. Major AI providers are still negotiating with CIOs of banks and consultancies for initial multi-year contracts for autonomous agents. Google has chosen to tackle the issue from the other side, starting with the end consumer and a device that has over 3 billion active units worldwide through Android. If Gemini Intelligence works well on the Pixel, it creates bottom-up social pressure in companies whose employees already run agents in their pockets.

Android 17 arrives rebranded as Intelligence System, a branding choice that seeks to erase the 'assistant' vocabulary and shift to 'agent.' The retirement of Google Assistant on Android, tablets, and Wear OS is scheduled for September 4. An Assistant born in 2016 is being phased out to make way for a Gemini that handles tasks across multiple screens.

The Gap Left Open by Apple

Apple promised a redesigned Siri with Gemini underneath, but the product is only expected to hit stores weeks after the Pixel 11, according to Quartz. In this interim, Google is doing what it did with the Pixel 4 and Pixel 8: using its own hardware to purely demonstrate what it believes Android does better. As Osterloh himself stated, the difference in direction is intentional.

For competitors in the model layer, the issue becomes interaction market share. If a customer asks a question over the phone and the phone delivers the answer by consulting the Gemini engine underneath, Anthropic and OpenAI lose interaction as an entry point. This is where long-term value accumulates because distribution becomes the default.

Market Insight

In the United States, the immediate effect is competitive. Apple, Amazon, and Meta, whose assistant proposals still rely on third-party stacks, fall behind in the end-of-year buying cycle. The window between the Pixel 11 on the shelf and a final-version agent Siri is the space in which Google effectively defines what 'AI phone' means.

In India, a market where Android holds about 95% market share and where Samsung, Xiaomi, and Vivo account for most of the volume sales, the Pixel remains marginal. However, the standard that Google sets with the Pixel is copied with a two to three-quarter lag by manufacturers running pure Android. For the offshore operations of American banks and consultancies in Bangalore and Pune, a phone with an agent changes the design of corporate security: an employee who opens a sensitive document on a personal cell phone can now delegate the text to an agent that triggers other apps, expanding the BYOD surface.

In Brazil, a market where Android also dominates smartphone sales, the effect is more gradual. The Pixel is not officially sold, but the Gemini Intelligence standard will arrive via Samsung One UI 8 and Motorola, which is already embedding layers of Gemini. Banks that pilot internal agents, like Itaú and Bradesco, will need to cater to a customer who expects the same type of multi-app execution from the bank agency that Google now delivers in their pocket. The benchmark rises without any additional purchases.

Osterloh did not announce subscription prices, a roadmap for enterprises, or a dedicated API for Gemini Intelligence. He announced a positioning: that Google believes the next battlefield for consumer AI is task delegation, not answering questions.
