Meta launches Muse for Small Business with $100 plans

Meta unveiled Muse for Small Business, a free AI agent with $20 and $100 plans, connecting to QuickBooks, Shopify, and Stripe. Available only in the U.S. and Canada, launched just after establishing a corporate unit led by CJ Desai.

Meta launched Muse for Small Business on Tuesday, the 29th, a version of its AI agent aimed at small businesses, free for most uses and with subscriptions of $20 and $100 per month for those needing more. The launch came a day after the company announced the Meta Enterprise Platform, a new business unit led by Chirantan "CJ" Desai, who until Monday was the president and CEO of MongoDB and now reports directly to Mark Zuckerberg.

What the agent does

Muse connects to tools small businesses already use: Asana, Box, Canva, Dropbox, Figma, Intuit QuickBooks, Klaviyo, Notion, Shopify, Slack, Stripe, and Zoom, among others. It also reads analytics from professional Instagram accounts, Facebook Pages, and Meta ad accounts. Users of services outside the list can create their own connectors.

With this access, the business owner can ask Muse to analyze sales, campaigns, and social media activity to devise a growth plan, track cash flow and inventory, draft messages to customers, and produce ads based on what has worked previously. Meta has established a clear limit: the agent does not publish content, send messages, or spend money without user approval. This safeguard transfers responsibility for each action to the owner, reducing Meta's exposure to erroneous paid ads or incorrect messages sent to customers.

The pricing model behind free

The pricing model is the strategic insight behind the launch. By charging $0 at the base and a maximum of $100 monthly at the top, Meta enters a market where Intuit, Shopify, and Salesforce sell AI tools as a paid add-on to existing subscriptions. Meta doesn't need Muse to be profitable on its own: each growth plan the agent creates routes through the company's own ad accounts, which remains its primary revenue source.

The Enterprise Platform completes the framework for larger accounts. This unit will house the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API, and Muse Code, a programming tool, according to Monday's announcement. According to CNBC, MongoDB's stock plummeted with the news of Desai's departure, indicating the market saw the hiring as a significant loss for the database company.

Availability

Muse for Small Business is currently available only in the United States and Canada for individuals over 18, and Meta states it is working to expand to other markets. This choice reverses the company's natural geography with small businesses. The channel where Meta already sells AI for retail is WhatsApp, via the Meta Business Agent, which interacts with customers and handles sales in the app, and the largest WhatsApp markets are in India and Brazil, not North America.

In Brazil and India, therefore, the launch is partial. Small retailers can already use the customer support agent on WhatsApp, but do not have the management agent that connects with QuickBooks and Shopify. For agencies and consultancies selling paid media management and customer service automation to small businesses in these countries, the time until Muse's arrival is a window to reposition their offerings, as a free agent that builds campaigns within the ad account competes directly with this service. In the U.S., the same pressure applies to accountants and service providers charging by the hour to reconcile QuickBooks and Stripe.

The blind spot

What Meta has not demonstrated is metrics on business usage. Muse's popularity among consumers in the U.S. and Canada does not indicate how many businesses will connect an accounting system to a Meta agent. The likely resistance is not technical: it involves giving a company whose revenue comes from ads read access to cash flow, inventory, and customer data. The human approval clause addresses the risk of inappropriate action. The question of who sees this data, and for what purpose, will determine adoption among the customers Meta most wants, those already spending on ads.
