OpenAI Launches Paid Agents; Angi and Wayfair Pilot Program

Labeled pilot launches first native ad channel in ChatGPT: brands operate conversational agents that continue the conversation after an ad click.

On September 16, OpenAI began the public pilot of Sponsored Agents, paid agents that act as labeled interlocutors within ChatGPT when a user clicks on an ad. Angi, formerly Angie's List, and Wayfair are part of the initial group of advertisers. The company described the format as a distinct conversation separate from the main assistant line, featuring the advertiser's visual identity and an explicit exit button to end the exchange.

The pilot is limited to selected advertisers in the United States and operates in English. From a product perspective, the mechanism works like this: the user makes an inquiry that triggers a relevant ad, clicks on the card, and is taken to a parallel session with the brand's agent. This agent can dive deeper into the inquiry, collect additional data, and, when appropriate, guide the user to the advertiser's own funnel, whether it's Angi's service quote form or Wayfair's shopping cart.

Changes Compared to Search Ads

The difference from Google’s sponsored link is not cosmetic. In the traditional model, a click takes the user away from the search box and hands them over to the advertiser's website, which needs to rebuild context and convert on the first click. In OpenAI's model, the context remains within the assistant, and the brand's agent inherits what the user has already stated about budget, timeline, or preference. "Our AI-first strategy is simple: make it easier for homeowners to find and hire the right pro for their project," said Angie Hicks, co-founder of Angi, in the official statement regarding their participation. For a service marketplace that relies on matching diffuse demand with local providers, the value lies precisely in the prior conversational filtering.

The impact on advertising cost structure also deserves attention. A search ad charges per click; a sponsored agent charges per conversation. OpenAI has not disclosed the exact commercial model, but pilot participants interviewed by industry publications indicate that initial monetization mixes traditional CPM with performance linked to the conversion of qualified leads.

Where the Change Lands

ChatGPT claims over 700 million weekly users by 2026. The American operation is where the pilot focuses, but the product's architecture is inherently global. This matters in three concrete channels.

In the UK, the digital advertising market operates under consumer protection rules established by the ASA, which require clear labeling of sponsored content; an extended conversational agent tests the limits of the rule, originally written for banners and videos. In Germany, the model faces scrutiny from the Bundesnetzagentur and the reading of the European AI Act concerning transparency of AI systems in interaction with individuals. OpenAI will need to prove from a regulatory standpoint that the visual labeling complies with Article 50 of the AI Act, which came into force in August and provides for fines of up to 15 million euros or 3% of global revenue.

In Brazil, the format aligns with the growth of social e-commerce and CADE's agenda on market concentration in advertising. An agent from Magalu or Mercado Livre operating within ChatGPT would capture a portion of the funnel that currently belongs to Google and Meta. The opportunity is real; the antitrust dispute vector is also present. The Brazilian AI Act, currently in Congress, contains transparency clauses inspired by the European text and an additional requirement for revealing the advertising nature.

The Counterpoint That Remains

Not every analyst buys the thesis that sponsored agents are the next dominant channel. Ben Thompson of Stratechery has reminded throughout the year that the main cost of ChatGPT is computational, and that an agent running five to ten conversation turns per qualified lead needs a significantly higher conversion rate than the sponsored link to cover GPU costs. A brand currently paying one dollar per click on Google would need to justify ten dollars for a conversation completed with the agent for the model to work.

OpenAI's narrative still has a declared weak point: the company operates at an operational loss and relies on long-term agreements with Microsoft, AWS, and now Google Cloud to offset inference costs. Sponsored Agents tackles this equation from the revenue side, and it's a bet that only works if the market rapidly adopts it and the cost per conversation decreases even faster.
