Trump Hosts Amodei for Dinner After Months of Tension

Donald Trump hosted Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, for a private dinner at the White House on Sunday night (27), marking the first face-to-face meeting between the two, according to Axios, which broke the news, and CNBC. Upon landing at Andrews Air Force Base after a golf tournament in Chicago, Trump confirmed the engagement and referred to Amodei as "very respected." In the same statement, he rejected the thesis the executive has been advocating for the past two weeks: "We are ahead of China in AI and frankly, I want that to continue because whoever wins in AI wins," he said, according to Euronews. Trump estimated the American advantage to be in "one year, maybe a year and a half."

Neither the White House nor Anthropic had disclosed the content of the conversation by the time this article was published.

From Veto to Invitation

The dinner comes after seven months of open conflict. In February, Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth labeled Anthropic as a "risk to the Pentagon's supply chain" after the company refused to allow its models to be used in fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the government would "NEVER" allow "a radical left, woke company" to dictate how the military fights. Last week, a federal appeals court ruled against Anthropic's attempt to contest the designation, according to Forbes.

The second source of tension arose on September 12, when Amodei published the essay "We Must Pace the Frontier," roughly 3,900 words long, calling for the industry to slow the pace of improvement of the most advanced models' capabilities. The text does not propose halting training but calls for permanent external evaluators, coordination among laboratories in democratic countries, and broader global coordination, with Anthropic committing to opening its models to independent evaluators. Trump reacted by stating that Amodei was trying to be "a perfect little angel."

Amodei was also noted as the only absentee from the state dinner the previous week, where Sam Altman from OpenAI and Sundar Pichai from Google were alongside the president. CNBC attributed the absence to a scheduling conflict.

Tuesday's Meeting

Sunday's meeting precedes the gathering that Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are expected to have with tech CEOs on Tuesday (29), according to Axios and Reuters. Johnson stated that there would be "a deliberate discussion on companies' responsibilities to maintain security." No outlet has published the list of participants or the agenda.

The contrast between the two statements defines the week. Johnson speaks of corporate responsibility; Trump reiterates that new regulation would open space for China. Whoever negotiates with the White House on Tuesday will hear both versions in the same room.

Three Capitals, Three Standards

The dinner occurs two days after a gesture that moves in the opposite direction of the race rhetoric. On Friday (26), following three days of a summit with Xi Jinping in Washington, the United States and China agreed to establish a communication channel for incidents involving AI, with a specific dialogue on the subject scheduled for November, according to the White House. The public agreement does not define what constitutes an incident, how an alert would be sent, or what response would follow.

The European Union is pursuing a different path. The Omnibus Digital package on AI, which delayed deadlines for high-risk obligations under the AI Act, came into force this year after an agreement between the Council and Parliament was reached in May. Brussels has reduced the pace of enforcement of the law but maintains the law; Washington continues to lack an equivalent federal law and treats speed as an industrial policy; Beijing accepts an incidents channel with Washington while maintaining its own layer of rules regarding content and algorithms.

For companies operating in all three markets, the divergence appears in contracts before it emerges in news reports. A European bank using American models adheres to the timeline of the AI Act, while the provider of those models negotiates its regulatory position over dinners in Washington. An integrator serving clients in the U.S. and the EU needs to document governance for Brussels even when the American client does not demand it.

What the Dinner Does Not Change

A dinner does not revoke an administrative act. The designation of Anthropic as a risk to the supply chain remains in effect until the Pentagon removes it or the courts overturn it, with the latest judicial decision being against the company. For CIOs purchasing models from more than one vendor, the indicator to watch in the coming weeks is a document, not a photo: any formal review of that designation would say more about the relationship between Washington and Anthropic than the Sunday menu.
